Description The Louisville Leader, an African American community newspaper, began publication in Louisville, Kentucky on November 3, 1917. It covered local religious, educational, social, fraternal, and sporting activities, as well as national and international news. The Louisville Leader was started by I. Willis Cole, and by the 1930s, the I. Willis Cole Publishing Company had established itself with an office at 930 West Walnut Street, twenty employees, and a weekly circulation of approximately 20,000. Cole planned ultimately to publish bi-weekly or even daily, but this hope ended with his death on February 19, 1950. His family tried to continue the newspaper, but suspended publication in the fall of 1950. The Cole Publishing Company building which housed original copies of the paper was badly damaged by a fire in 1954. The remaining issues were microfilmed by the University of Louisville in cooperation with Kentucky State University and the friends and family of publisher I. Willis Cole. The digital files in this collection were created from that microfilm.
